Which sort of languages is most difficult to learn for you?
5/1/2009 | external link
Sadly I've always been a bit rubbish at languages  I'm just not very good at pronouncing the words right, not sure whether it's because I don't pick up the subtle nuances when I hear foreign languages or whether it's my tongue mangling the sounds when I try to reproduce them. *sigh* Do still *try* to speak the lingo when I'm abroad, but often with mixed success. The one language other than english that I probably know most of is Latin, cos of my scientific background, but even then I'm far better at reading it then writing or speaking it. *shrug*.

Mines kind of a nickname I've had since I was a kid, doesn't really get used in RL anymore (thankfully) but thought it would do as an online nick that I'd be able to remember. :).

Longest time away from home
5/1/2009 | external link
The longest holiday I've had away was a month in Dubai (actually I was staying in sharjah, the next emirate down) a few years back. I do like to travel but I'm also the kind of person that really likes to be back in my own space after a trip. :).
When you see a photo of a journey
5/1/2009 | external link
I've certainly looked at mates' holiday snaps and thought "Wow! I have to see that place for myself", but in reality I don't think it's ever been the deciding factor on whether or not I visit a particular location; Wouldn't have time to hold down a job if I visited *everywhere* with stunning vistas. *shrug*.
Turkey and Leek pie
5/1/2009 | external link
Don't know if it makes much difference but I read that it was good to bag up the cooked turkey into portions and add a cup or so of turkey broth (presumably to help it drying out too much) - we'll see if that helps...
It *should* help with keeping the meat from drying out, but will probably be good for the flavour too! ;) Chicken and leek is good, but not sure I'd bother doing it as a pie, pastry isn't something I'm good at :? My fave Xmas left-over meal is turkey and ham cheese bake. :) Layers of pre-boiled potatos, and turkey and ham, covered in a strong cheese sauce and then baked in the oven for a while (until you got a nice browned crust on top). Works wonderfully with spinach, broccoli, or pretty much any of the "dark green" veg! :).
Your Christmas dinner this year will be....

[quote:4d63db162c="Besalu2008"]sausage and stuffing sandwiches They were indeed great! :D [quote:4d63db162c]About 3 years ago I bought a young gosling at a farmers market with the intention of fattening it up and having it for Christmas dinner. As the goose got older it became a bit of a pet. Not so much that we would let it in the house, but the kids liked it. Anyways, the time came to do the deed and I read up on the internet about the best way to end its life and pluck it etc. I was almost there but in the end I just couldnt do it so we asked a neighbour to do it for us. She is about 80 and had no hesitation - must have been rearing animals for slaughter all her life.
3 meals , 3 countries one day
5/1/2009 | external link
Are you counting Scotland and/or Waless as seperate for the purposes of this trip? If so I'd say it's probably pretty do-able. Even if you aren't then you've got plenty of close choices: Ireland, France, Belgium and Holland, to start with. Why not use budget airlines though? surely that's going to help keep the price down massively, and it's not like you're likely to be on any of the flights for *that* long, even if it is a bit cramped and uncomfortable. Anyway, interesting idea, good luck with it! :).
Accents
5/1/2009 | external link
[quote:b5cf43dfa8="zydeco joe"]It was not until we traveled around parts of Colorado and the west that I found out that I had a Aussie accent. Which is very strange as I am and very Proud to be a "Black Country Man". :? :? :? . I have spoken to many other people and it seems that many non traveled Americans think that a British accent is Australian ???. too much "Neighbours" on the old TV. It's true that the average American does not have a passport and travel only in the States. Not that I blame them as we love the States well the west that is. Zydeco Joe [/quote:b5cf43dfa8] I've heard it said that the Australian accent is pretty close to, and, to some extent, derived from the London accent, going back to the days when HM govt was shipping people out there.
Saudi Arabia

[quote:617906d788="wendy"]I think we'll be staying with family. No, I can't read Arabic but my husband is fluent in it as he grew up there. I am trying to get some quick basic language books. There are two - one with tape - coming out next month so have them on order. I hope we can travel around a little. I am wondering what I should wear as a Caucasian woman. Would it be better just to cover up and not draw attention?? I can't ask these questions of the family. The women don't speak English and it's difficult to get answers from the men.[/quote:617906d788] you can wear whatever u want but you have to wear abaya above it these is the example for it and u can wear any king of these (on the right) .

The biggest structure ever moved

[quote:78d6799403="harmonsmith"]Principal Financial Group are moving his 44th floor building "Principal Tower" a couple run-down shacks a few blocks.Principal Tower, currently located at 801 Grand, has 45 floors and stands 192 meters at its highest point. It is estimated to weigh 379,083 tons. Completed in 1991, the HOK-designed building has dominated the Des Moines skyline for 17 years.if management doesnt like the new site after trying it out a year or two, they will probably move the building back downtown Does anyone know the biggest structure ever moved :?:[/quote:78d6799403] That's just crazy! what's wrong with where it is? Honestly someone at that company *really* needs a psych evaluation! It just seems like a terrible waste of resources to me, even if the company can afford the bill, I thought everyone was meant to be more conscious of wasting energy these days! Admittedly Exeter does have it's "house that moved" but that was a 16th century building (ie had some historical value) which was moved because it was in the way of a bypass the city needed, * and * it wasn't exactly a large structure to be shifting about.

I'm a Brit, but even so I can't help but think that article is just trying to draw attention away from how rubbish we are at sports, on the whole. Admittedly my view might be clouded by being a rugby fan, but it's hard to see very much good about English Rugby at the moment, at least going by the Autumn internationals. Here's hoping the 6 nations gives a little more cause for optimism! :).
Friendliest and Most Arrogant Countries?
5/1/2009 | external link
I have travelled abroad several times, and must admit that I find the French people rather arogent. The Italians I find friendly but the most inviting are the good people of Southern Ireland. The Germans, contrary to belief, I found very friendly too.

You're a gentleman and scholar ADLI! (unless you're female in which case please accept my apologies, and amend to a Lady and a scholar) In fairness though "your so near but so far" comment did kind of give away that there was probably an "O", so i'm happy enough to loose a life over my "I" guess *shrug* :).
Your Favorite Food???
5/1/2009 | external link
Would have to be curry for me, but it can be hard to find somewhere that does it really well, at least in the westcountry. The place that's been my regular for about 15yrs recently changed their chef, and the food's just not as good anymore  Been on a quest to find somewhere else decent ever since *sigh*.
